The 2012-13 Big Island Interscholastic Federation boys and girls bowling seasons open today with matches at Hilo Lanes.

As in past seasons, there will be a 10 a.m. session in which the teams bowl three games, followed by an afternoon three-game session starting about 1 p.m.

The Konawaena boys and Waiakea girls are the defending BIIF champions.

Today’s matches include:

c Morning session: Kamehameha-Hawaii vs. Kealakehe, Ka‘u vs. Hilo, Pahoa vs. Laupahoehoe and Konawaena vs. Keaau.

c Evening session: St. Joseph vs. Kealakehe, Ka’u vs. Laupahoehoe, Pahoa vs. Hilo and Konawaena vs. Waiakea

The BIIF teams will play each other once during the regular season, with the top teams and individuals advancing to the league championships.

The state championships will be rolled Nov. 3 on Kauai.

St. Joseph athletic director Chloe Thurston is the BIIF bowling coordinator.
